Mining compliance deadlines
Mining compliance deadlines: keep them in one list and get reminded.
A missed renewal or return can cost far more than the time it takes to file. Varo keeps your mining deadlines in one list and reminds you before each one is due.
A note on names. The DMPR is the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources. After the 2024 elections the old Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) was split in two, and mining sits with the DMPR. You will still see "DMRE" on older documents and in older searches, so both names are used here.
The deadlines you can track
- Mining right renewal
- Social and Labour Plan (SLP): the annual report and the five-year review
- Risk assessment reviews
- DMPR returns (formerly DMRE returns)
- Royalty returns, interim and final
- MHSA returns
- Mining Charter scorecard
- Water use licences and environmental authorisations
- Permit expiries, and contractor medicals, inductions and insurance
Where the dates come from
Varo only works out a date itself when it can point to an official source. Today that is the royalty returns. SARS's guide says the first provisional return is due six months after the start of the year of assessment, the second twelve months after the start, and the final return twelve months after the year ends. Give Varo the month your financial year ends and it works out the dates. The guides are on SARS's site: GEN-GEN-01-G02 and GEN-GEN-01-G01.
For every other deadline, you enter the date from your own documents: your mining right, your approved SLP, your licence. Varo does not guess a statutory date, because a wrong date that looks official is worse than no date.
How reminders work
- You can switch on an email reminder 14 days, 3 days and 1 day before a deadline. It is off until you turn it on, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe.
- Each email has a link that opens Varo so you can mark the deadline filed. Nothing is marked filed until you confirm it there.
- The dashboard also shows what is coming up and what is overdue.
What it does not do
- It does not file anything for you. Varo reminds and prepares; you file.
- It does not check whether your mine is compliant, and it is not legal advice. Your compliance officer or adviser remains the authority.
